Why Saturday?
Most visitors drive down from Southern California for a short stay, and Saturday is the one night nearly everyone wants. Friday and Sunday leave room. If your dates are flexible, a Friday and Sunday stay can be easier to get.
Why it is a long weekend
Memorial Day honors those who died in service.
It is not Veterans Day, and it is not only the start of summer. Wherever you spend it, the day asks for one small thing: a pause at 3:00 p.m. local time.

When is Memorial Day weekend 2027?
Memorial Day is the last Monday of May. In 2027 that is Monday, May 31, 2027, so the long weekend runs Friday, May 28 to Monday, May 31.
Do Rosarito hotels really sell out?
The local hotel association reported 100% occupancy on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend 2026, with 61% on Friday and 79% on Sunday. The year before, Saturday reached 98%. Saturday is the night to book first.
What is on in Rosarito that weekend?
In 2026 the weekend included a multi-day Papas & Beer event (18 and over), the Rosarito Art Walk, the Fiestas de La Misión and a Paella, Flamenco and Wine festival. Organizers announce each year's dates separately, usually a few months ahead.
How long is the border wait coming back?
It varies enormously. One guide cites under 10 minutes on a quiet weekday morning and over three hours on a holiday Sunday evening. Check the official CBP wait times at bwt.cbp.gov before you leave, and read our border plan.
What do I need to cross?
A valid passport book or passport card to re-enter the United States, and Mexican auto insurance if you are driving, because US policies generally do not cover you in Mexico. Check Mexico's current entry rules for your nationality if you plan to go beyond a short visit.
